Physical Education 3

Physical education is an important part of the school curriculum as it offers many opportunities for child development from personal to social to physical. With this in mind we aim to offer a range of activities which we hopefully appeal to most children at some point!

The regular curriculum offers games, gymnastics and dance and this is taught over two lessons on a weekly basis. Alongside this, each year group is offered a 10 week swimming unit which is very important as we feel that there are many children in our school who are not taken swimming out of school, thus have very little confidence in water and are weak or non swimmers. If this is the case at the end of year 6, we have a top up swimming course which is a two week intensive daily swimming course which hopefully gets the children to the 25 metre target. For the stronger swimmers we will be selecting for a swimming gala for later on this year.

As P.E has been recently identified by the government as a key area, due to opportunities to encourage healthy lifestyles, we receive further support from outside agencies such as sportlinx and school sports coordinators. Through this we get support in lessons, specialist teaching in a given sport and sport festivals organised within our cluster of local schools……therefore everyone benefits!!!

Alongside the curriculum lessons we also have opportunities in year 6 to attend Kingswood, an outdoor adventure centre, where children take part in outdoor activities such as climbing, abseiling etc Finally we also invite outside clubs, such as fencing and judo, to come in to school to provide even further opportunities. Unfortunately there is a cost of £25 for 6 sessions but the children really enjoy these experiences.

Also our extra curricular clubs give further opportunities to develop skills, knowledge and tactics and these are available from year 2 to year 6. This will also give children the opportunities to compete in inter school competitions.

If we identify any children with particular talents in any sport we will encourage them to join a club outside of school where they will be able to be challenged to reach their potential.
