Skipping workshop

At Leamington we took part in a sjipping workshop that was run by an outside agency. Each key stage 2 year group got the chance to take part in a 45 minute workshop were we were taught new skills and how to work as a team. Here is a little bit of information about it:

Skipping Workshops was set up in 1997 by former primary school headteacher Harold Galley. He started a skipping club at his school and soon became aware of the many advantages of encouraging skipping. These include better levels of fitness, improved behaviour on the playground and significant gains in overall levels of performance in all aspects of PE.

Skipping Workshops began providing services to schools in the South-West London area in 1997 and has gradually expanded so that, by 2003, every LEA in England was being offered free skipping demonstrations. Skipping Workshops coaches come from a variety of backgrounds. Many, like Harold Galley, have long service as primary school teachers. All coaches undertaken a rigorous training programme provided by the company and all are recognised by the British Rope Skipping Association.(BRSA). The company’s coaches regularly attend events organised by the BRSA. Two of our coaches, Harold Galley and Sue Dale, run high quality display teams that promote skipping throughout the UK.

The majority of our work is in primary schools, although we have also been invited to secondary schools, sport centres and even football clubs. We run regular workshops during evenings and holiday periods for a variety of organisations.

The aim of the company is to encourage children, teaching and non-teaching staff (and parents) to skip in order to improve health, playground behaviour and social skills. It appeals to children of all ages and is one of the few activities that encourages boys and girls to play together.

Skipping helps with co-ordination, concentration, co-operation and communication skills, as well as all the obvious health benefits relating to calorie burning and weight loss. It’s athletic, aerobic and gymnastic.
