Welcome to Year 6

Mrs McKevitt and Mr Owen are looking forward to a busy half term preparing for SATs. We would like to emphasise how important attendance is. Being in school every day is vital for Year 6 children to avoid missing important topics as there is lots to learn before moving to high school.

Our narrative book this half term is ‘The Last Viking’. It is an exciting story about a Viking invasion and links with our history topic. We will be joining Emma on her adventure and writing a newspaper report on the vicious attack at Lindisfarne.

Our history topic this half term is ‘The Vikings – Were the Vikings vicious or victorious?’ Throughout this topic, children will find out about the Vikings invasion over the Anglo-Saxons, where they arrived from and where they settled in Britain. We will explore how the Vikings lived and their way of life. We will place significant events on a timeline and discover how they came to rule over England at the time.

Our Science topic is ‘Light’. We will explore the way that light travels, how it helps us to see and different functions of the parts of the eye. We will also look at weather creating shadows and the speed of light in lightning.

Throughout this half term we will be preparing for our SATs in May. Children will continue to practise their arithmetic skills, reasoning and problems solving, developing their reading skills and demonstrate their knowledge of Spelling Punctuation and Grammar.

Some important information for Year 6 is:

  • Children have logins to Maths.co.uk, Maths Whizz and Spag.com and should access these daily at home.
  • Children should be revising for their SATs each night.
  • Home Reader books will be given out every Friday and should be returned to school to be changed every Friday. Children should read daily at home.

Year 6 teachers would like to encourage children to bring in water bottles and a piece of fruit for snack, if they wish.

Golden Reading Challenge!

  • From 12th September, we will be starting a new ‘Golden Reading Challenge’ in year 6. We expect all children to read at least 3 times a week. If children read 3 times a week (reading record must be signed by a parent or guardian), they will receive a prize at the end of the week and their name will be entered into a draw for a ‘golden’ prize at the end of each half term. Good luck and happy reading!

Please bring reading books in everyday so that teachers can read with children in school at least once a week.
