At Leamington Community Primary School we design our curriculum using a range of text types and teaching tools including ‘narrative immersion’ and ‘talk 4 writing’.  Through the curriculum children explore texts in a variety of ways including the use of drama conventions, comprehensions, creative writing activities, spelling and grammar lessons.

Narrative Immersion

Recently Leamington has taken on a narrative approach to learning. This means that quality texts are at the heart of our curriculum. Teachers from Year 1 to Year 6 have worked with Mrs Halligan, our Lead Practitioner to plan work around a specific narrative for every half term. Throughout the year the children will explore 6 different books. The work planned covers a range of different subjects including English, History, Geography, Computing, Art and DT.  We are currently developing links with Maths and problem solving.

Talk 4 Writing

Children also use elements of Pie Corbett’s model to unpick texts and build vocabulary to support their writing. Children orally re-tell stories and compose their own versions before publishing in a range of ways.

Aims

  • To read easily, fluently and with good understanding.
  • To develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information.
  • To acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
  • To write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
  • Use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to explain clearly their understanding and ideas.
  • Ensure they are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

Into Key Stage 2 they begin to focus on spelling rules. We follow ‘Spelling Toolkit’ from Year 3 through to Year 6.
