Welcome to Year 5
The Year 5 team would like to welcome all children back after half term! The children have had a fantastic start to Year 5 and we are really looking forward to this term! We have lots of exciting activities planned before we begin thinking about Christmas!
This term we will be starting a new book, ‘Journey to Jo’burg. We will be exploring themes in the book such as poverty, apartheid and cultural differences. The book links with our Geography topic – ‘Why is South Africa in the news again?’ We will be researching indigenous tribes, life in South Africa, the slums of South Africa and the human and physical features.
Our Science topic is called ‘Will we ever send another human to the moon?’ This will involve exploring the solar system, in particular the Sun, Moon and Earth! Children will find out how day and nights occurs and also why we have seasons. We will compare our seasons to other places around the world. We are also hoping to visit Spaceport during the term, which will enhance the children’s learning. We will use our ICT, Art and DT skills to maximise our learning in this topic.
Some important information for Year 5 parents/carers:
- Year 5 will have swimming on a Friday morning – please ensure children have swimming kits and swimming caps.
- Children will be taking part in guitar sessions with Mr Rooney from Notre Dame Secondary School.
- Homework club will run every Thursday afterschool with Mrs Tuzio – all children are welcome!
Year 5 teachers would like to encourage children to bring in water bottles and a piece of fruit for snack, if they wish. Homework will be given on a Friday and should be returned to school on a Wednesday.
