Welcome to Year 1

Miss Crabtree, Miss Hornby and Miss Farley would like to welcome you back after your half term break. We hope you are ready for all the exciting learning we have planned for our final term of Year 1!  We have even more amazing lessons planned along with a few surprises coming up.

Just a gentle reminder to please continue to read with your child every night, it supports their learning in class and has a huge impact on their learning.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to the following term together.

Phonics

We are following the RWI scheme, which is having a fantastic impact on children’s progress. On top of their English lesson each day, they all take part in a full RWI lesson. Children are placed in small groups specific to their needs and ability, this allows them to apply their phonic skills on a daily basis and review sounds repeatedly every day. Children are also supported throughout the day and are given opportunities to take part in 1-1 phonic tutoring sessions, which enables them to work specifically on areas that they need to focus on.

Children are continually assessed during daily RWI lessons and so they are able to move on as soon as they are ready to do so. We also complete phonic assessments following the RWI format to track their progress. We really appreciate your continued support as reading and practising phonics at home has a significant impact on your child’s progress. Ruth Miskin offers a variety of phonic videos online that you can watch at home:

The children have completed their Phonics Screening Check and have done really well- you will find out more about how they got on soon! We are so proud of them all.

English

Our English topic will be focused around the book ‘Storm Whale’ as children will be exploring stories with a familiar setting. The children will work towards writing their own story with a familiar setting.

We will also explore 2-digit numbers, counting forwards and backwards and identifying the value of each digit in order to consolidate their understanding.

During science this half term we will be looking at plants and trees. We will explore, name and identify a variety of common plants and trees. In this topic we find out more about plants, what environments we find different plant in and look at the parts of a plant. We also learn the difference between evergreen and deciduous trees. We will even grow our own plants and record their growth over the term.

This half term children will be exploring events beyond their lifetime. We will investigate The Great Fire of London and identify key events that took place and create our own timeline. We will also look at how we are able to learn about this event through useful sources. Children will explore what life was like in the 17th century and compare it to life today. They will discuss and research jobs, lifestyles, food and family life.
